One of the changes in recent years has been the increased attention given by merchants to how people pay. This has been driven in part by the regulatory reforms instigated by the RBA as well as a desire to control costs in a period of pressure on margins. Most merchants choose to do nothing to alter the way their customers choose to pay although a number do apply surcharges, block acceptance of certain card types and impose minimum transaction amounts.
